held in check (day 36), 2019

54 x 24 x 25 cms (hwd)
Hand coiled steel and amber rosin - the rosin appears solid but is constantly moving.

held in check is a working experiment exploring amorphous materials - that is materials that have both fluid and solid properties. Bitumen and rosin are two such materials; they appear solid and brittle at room temperature and yet can be highly viscose.

In this work the rosin block is 'contained' by the steel coil unsuccessfully as the material has a life of its own.
